In patients with Multiple Myeloma (MM), bone lesions can lead to multiple vertebral lesions, with vertebral collapses. The introduction of minimally invasive procedures such as percutaneous vertebroplasty allow patients to return to a fair level of function and a significant reduction in pain. Despite medical therapies, radiotherapy, analgesics and vertebroplasty procedures, patients with multiple spinal injuries often complain of pain and stiffness that limit their mobility, daily activities and work. The aim of this study is to measure how the biomechanical, thermo-metabolic and algic parameters change after vertebroplasty in...
Background: Cancer has a major impact in the United States and across the world. In 2015, over 1.5 million new cases of cancer were diagnosed in the U.S. Researchers want to study samples from people with cancer or a pre-malignant condition. They hope to develop more effective treatments. Objective: To better understand the biology of malignancies and why certain cancers respond differently to treatment. Eligibility: Adults at least 18 years old with cancer or a pre-cancerous condition. Design: Participants will be screened with a medical history, physical exam, and blood tests. Their ...
The main purpose of this study is to examine the outcome of a combined bone marrow and kidney transplant from a partially matched related (haploidentical or "haplo") donor. This is a pilot study, you are being asked to participate because you have a blood disorder and kidney disease. The aim of the combined transplant is to treat both your underlying blood disorder and kidney disease. We expect to have about 10 people participate in this study. Additionally, because the same person who is donating the kidney will also be donating the bone marrow, there may be a smaller chance of kidney rejection and less need for long-term use of...
This phase I/II trial studies the safety of the combination of bortezomib, dexamethasone, and pembrolizumab with or without pelareorep in treating patients with multiple myeloma that has come back (relapsed) or does not response to treatment (refractory). Chemotherapy drugs, such as bortezomib and dexamethasone, work in different ways to stop the growth of cancer cells, either by killing the cells, by stopping them from dividing, or by stopping them from spreading. Immunotherapy with monoclonal antibodies, such as pembrolizumab, may help the body's immune system attack the cancer, and may interfere with the ability of tumor cells to ...
This is a single-arm, open-label phase II study with a safety lead-in phase.
Despite the greater risk of adverse COVID-19 outcomes, antibody and cell-mediated immune responses to COVID-19 vaccines vary amongst immunocompromised (IC) people and are poorly defined. IC hosts were largely excluded from the COVID-19 vaccine registration trials, though many countries recommend additional and booster doses of vaccination in this group. BOOST-IC is an adaptive randomised clinical trial (RCT) to assess the immunogenicity and safety of additional COVID-19 vaccine doses in immunocompromised (IC) people, including people with HIV, solid organ transplants (SOT) recipients or those with haematological malignancies....
Cancer drugs which target the effects of abnormal gene changes are called 'targeted therapies'. This study, called PM.1 or CAPTUR, will include some targeted therapies that are currently available. The purpose of this study is to find out what are the effects on a patient and their cancer when they are given a targeted therapy drug that is specific to an abnormal gene change in their cancer.
The primary purpose of this protocol is to create a registry of older (≥50 years old) patients with Hematologic Malignancies. Our main objectives include: To understand the prevalence of frailty and geriatric impairments among patients aged ≥50y and above diagnosed with a hematologic malignancy at UAB and to gather information that would lend support for future research in this vulnerable population.
The Cancer Experience Registry®: An Online Survey Research Study to Understand the Experiences of Those Impacted By a Cancer Diagnosis. The Registry is a web-based platform to distribute cross-sectional and longitudinal surveys. Study surveys are designed based on input from advisor experts, including patients and caregivers, and focus on the social, emotional, physical, financial and decision-making experiences of those who have been diagnosed with cancer and their caregivers. Findings contribute toward enhancing care for patients, survivors and caregivers via programming and policy initiatives.
Multiple myeloma (MM) is a malignant proliferative plasma cell disease, which accounts for approximately 10% and ranks secondly of hematological malignancies in many countries. It is more common in the middle-aged and elderly, and currently cannot be healed. 2022 ESC Guidelines on cardio-oncology developed in collaboration with the European Hematology Association (EHA), the European Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ESTRO) and the International Cardio-Oncology Society (IC-OS) showed the quantitative definition table for cancer related cardiovascular toxicity (CTR-CVT) related to cancer treatment, which is crucial for...
